Thank You Page Upsell Gone After 26 August 2026? Here Is Why
Your Thank you page upsell vanished on 26 August. Here is exactly what happened.
Shopify sunset additional scripts on the Thank you and Order status pages for non Plus stores, then upgraded every store that had not migrated. No error, no email. Upsells, surveys and tracking pixels simply stopped being called.
Nobody sent you an email about this
If your post purchase upsell stopped converting in late August, your survey stopped collecting answers, or your conversion tracking quietly went flat, you did not break anything. Shopify sunset the thing it was running on, and it upgraded your store for you.
Shopify puts it plainly in its own help centre. Stores that were not upgraded by the deadline were upgraded automatically. There was no opt out and no grace period. Anything that depended on the old architecture simply stopped being called, with no console error and no banner in the admin.
This is why the damage usually surfaces as a revenue question rather than a technical one. Someone notices attach rate has gone to zero, or that the numbers in an ad platform no longer match the numbers in Shopify.
Most articles on this have the dates wrong
They confuse the Shopify Scripts shutdown with the checkout.liquid sunsets. Those are two separate deprecations on two separate timetables, and mixing them up is how you end up reading that your deadline is in the future when it has already passed. Here is the actual sequence, from Shopify documentation and changelog.
| Date | What ended | Who it hit |
|---|---|---|
| 13 August 2024 | checkout.liquid stopped working on the Information, Shipping and Payment steps | Shopify Plus |
| 28 August 2025 | checkout.liquid, additional scripts and script tags sunset on Thank you and Order status | Shopify Plus |
| 15 April 2026 | Shopify Scripts could no longer be edited or published | Scripts users, Plus |
| 30 June 2026 | Shopify Scripts stopped executing entirely | Scripts users, Plus |
| 26 August 2026 | checkout.liquid, additional scripts and script tags sunset on Thank you and Order status | Non Plus stores |
| 1 March 2027 | Online store script tags stop running | All stores |
If you are not on Plus, 26 August 2026 is your date. If you are on Plus this happened to you a year earlier, in August 2025, and if something has been quietly missing since then, this is very likely why.
That last row has not happened yet. Online store script tags stop running on 1 March 2027, so anything injected through a script tag on your storefront rather than in checkout has another deadline coming.
Four things, in the order we usually find them
Post purchase upsells
Any offer that rendered on the Thank you page through additional scripts is gone. If it came from an app, the app is usually fine, but its block has to be placed again in the new editor. It will not reappear on its own.
Tracking pixels and conversion tags
Anything pasted into additional scripts to fire on order completion is no longer firing. This is the expensive one, because your ad platforms keep spending while the conversion signal they optimise against has gone quiet.
Surveys and post purchase questions
Where did you hear about us, how did you find this product. Those stopped collecting on the sunset date, and the gap in the data is permanent.
Custom order status content
Delivery instructions, warranty registration prompts, referral offers, anything written into the order status page through the old template.
Five checks, and one of them matters more than the rest
- Place a test order. Use a real payment method and refund it after. Walk all the way through to the Thank you page and then the Order status page, and look for what should be there and is not.
- Open Settings, then Checkout, and find the additional scripts field. If it still contains code, that code is dead. It is not running. Do not delete it.
- Copy that code somewhere safe. This is the one that matters. That field is your only remaining inventory of what your checkout used to do, and it sits in an interface Shopify has already deprecated. Once it is cleared you are rebuilding from memory.
- Open the checkout and accounts editor. App blocks for the Thank you and Order status pages have to be added there by hand. Check every app that had post purchase functionality.
- Compare last month of conversions in your ad platform against orders in Shopify. If the gap opened in late August, you have found your tracking problem.
Each thing has a different route, and none of them is copy and paste
- Upsells and post purchase offers
- Rebuilt as checkout UI extensions, delivered as app blocks and placed in the checkout and accounts editor. Most upsell apps already ship these. If yours does not, that is a reason to change app rather than a reason to write custom code.
- Tracking and analytics
- Move to web pixel extensions. This is genuinely a better system than pasting script tags, because the pixel runs in a sandbox and receives structured events rather than scraping the page. It is also a rebuild, and this is where most of the work sits.
- Discount, shipping and cart logic
- Anything that lived in Shopify Scripts moves to Shopify Functions. Different language and a different model, and worth knowing that Functions run server side and are far more reliable than Scripts were.
- Custom content on the order status page
- Becomes a checkout UI extension. Available on every plan except Starter, so this one is not gated behind Plus.
What you can and cannot rebuild
This is where most content on the subject is vague, and it matters, because it decides whether your problem is fixable at all.
| Capability | Plans |
|---|---|
| Checkout UI extensions on Thank you and Order status | All plans except Starter |
| Checkout UI extensions on Information, Shipping and Payment | Shopify Plus only |
| Checkout Branding API | Shopify Plus only |
| Shopify Functions | All plans except Starter |
| Web pixel extensions | All plans except Starter |
| Market overrides for checkout extensions | Advanced and above |
| Post purchase UI extensions | All plans except Starter, still described as beta |
Read that carefully if you are not on Plus. You can rebuild everything on the Thank you and Order status pages, you can rebuild your logic with Functions, and you can rebuild your tracking with web pixels.
What you cannot do without Plus is restyle or restructure the checkout steps themselves. No custom fields on the shipping step, no rearranged payment step, no branding past what the settings expose. If your old checkout.liquid was doing that, there is no non Plus route back to it, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something.
That is an honest reason to consider Plus. It is also an honest reason not to, if all you actually lost was post purchase content.
Frequently asked
Is there any replacement for additional scripts on the Order status page?
Yes, but not a drop in one. Content becomes a checkout UI extension and tracking becomes a web pixel extension. There is no single field you can paste your old code into, which is the answer people are usually hoping for.
Can I get my old checkout.liquid back?
No. It is sunset on every plan and there is no route back. What you can do is rebuild the individual pieces on the new architecture, and on the Thank you and Order status pages you can rebuild all of it.
Why did my tracking break without any error?
Because nothing failed. Shopify stopped calling the old script location, so your code was never executed rather than executed and broken. Silence looks identical to working until you compare the numbers.
Shopify Scripts are gone too. What replaces them?
Shopify Functions. Discounts, payment and delivery customisation, cart and checkout validation and order limits are all covered, and Functions are available on every plan except Starter. Note the dates are different: Scripts stopped executing on 30 June 2026, which is not the same deadline as the checkout.liquid sunset.
How long does a rebuild take?
Post purchase content and app blocks are usually a day. Tracking is the variable one, because it depends how many platforms you feed and how much of it was custom. Scripts to Functions depends entirely on how much logic there was.
Things we’ve seen matter more than design: unexpected shipping cost at checkout, no size guidance on apparel, slow product pages on mobile, missing reviews, unclear returns policy, and a search function that returns nothing for the brand’s own product names.
